We Are a Generation of Mobile Phone Junkies, and we are Breeding Even More

By now, we’ve all grown accustomed to – even complacent about – the predominant role our mobile devices play in our daily lives. We’re no longer appalled by the now-clichéd image of a group of friends seated around a dinner table, each so focused upon their mobile phone screen that they might as well be alone. As a matter of fact, we don’t even see the scenario as being strange. It is arguable whether this is cause for concern in and of itself, but looking at the broader picture, including how mobile phones have begun to dominate our children’s lives, should at least give one pause. Yes, we are addicted Back in 2014, the Apigee Institute, in collaboration with the Stanford University Mobile Innovation Group, surveyed 1,000 mobile phone users in the US and UK to determine the level of users’ “apdiction” to their mobile phones and its effect upon their social lives. The most frequent users, those who acknowledge using the apps on their mobile phones almost constantly, claim that their devices enhance their productivity, while at the same time admitting that their socializations would suffer significantly were they to be deprived of the social apps on their phones. New toy, or high-tech heroin? It would seem logical to assume that a new user would be intrigued by the capabilities of his or her smartphone, and would tend to play with it at first, only to have his or her interest (and use) begin to wane as the novelty wore off. The Apigee study, however, found that the novelty does not wear off; rather, it inspires users to seek out and download even more apps, and to use their smartphones as much as or even more than they had previously. Smartphone / app use was shown to have a particularly pervasive effect on virtually all areas of users’ lives. For example, according to the study: 92 percent reported that having a smartphone has altered how they connect with friends 58 percent said it has changed how they manage their health 49 percent said it has changed how they date 84 percent of shoppers said it has changed how they shop 78 percent of people who use banks said it has changed how they bank 70 percent of TV viewers said it has changed how they watch TV and movies 65 percent of employees said it has changed how they do their job How are our children being affected? As far back as 2008, psychiatrists were beginning to see an alarming pattern in the behaviour of children who had smartphones. According to a Guardian article published in June of that year, two children in Spain were admitted to a mental health clinic by their parents, who claimed that the children, ages 12 and 13, “could not carry out normal activities without their phones”. The children spent an average of six hours a day on their phones, with the result being that their socialization with their peers apparently deteriorated significantly, and they began having trouble carrying out other normal activities without constantly reverting to their mobile phones. Apparently, the case of the Spanish children was merely a forebear of a phenomenon that has become increasingly widespread as more and more children and young people have their own mobile phones. Ownership of a popular model of mobile phone has become one of the most important status symbols to children, particularly among teens. Even the use of the phones, in lieu of other more traditional childhood activities, has evolved into a required social norm. Child psychologist Dr. David Lewis describes the problem thusly, “The mobile now often substitutes for physical play. To develop proper friendships you have to invest time with people, doing things together. Speaking on the phone and sending lots of text messages will give children many more acquaintances but fewer friends.” Given the increasingly polarized interactions we’re seeing in so many aspects of adult life, it is becoming ever more essential that children of the next and future generations learn how to effectively manage relationships with others whose perspectives conflict with their own. A generation that lacks the social skills and incentive to integrate with others who hold to a different mindset has little hope of resolving or averting problems that could well prove catastrophic. We definitely need to instill in our children an awareness of the economic impact of mobile phone use, but our responsibility goes far beyond teaching them how to shop for the best price for mobile phone service. We must at the same time teach them how to set their mobile phones aside, so that they can develop the interpersonal skills that are so vital for a well-adjusted, satisfying life. But first, we’ll have to put down our own phones now and then. ...

Silk Road

Security Lessons From The Silk Road

Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the infamous and highly illicit Silk Road online marketplace, was sentenced on May 29th, 2015 to life in prison without parole. In what has become one of the most profound case studies of crime, technology, and anonymity in our time, the world has learned firsthand the implications of information security. The digital realm isn’t Las Vegas – what happens there, stays there forever. Had Ulbricht avoided some simple mistakes, he’d likely still be a free man today. While the vast majority of people aren’t planning to become the next international cyber-criminal mastermind, the lessons of Silk Road’s demise and Ulbricht’s ultimate downfall should still be understood by anyone with a smartphone. Since becoming an off-the-grid luddite isn’t an option for most people, there are measures that can be taken to secure sensitive data and information. Knowing about these techniques is critical to being secure in the always vulnerable digital landscape, and a general overview of the Silk Road case can provide some valuable lessons. Anonymity One of the most significant elements of the success of Silk Road was the anonymity it afforded users. This wasn’t actually done through Silk Road however, but through an anonymizing TOR software that allowed access to the darknet platform. While TOR software has received somewhat of a negative stigma throughout the history of Silk Road, it’s important to note that anonymizing software like TOR isn’t inherently illegal or considered suspicious simply by its download or use. In fact, encryption technologies are actually recommended for use by most security experts for those who object to any form of known or unknown surveillance by outside entities. It’s incorrect to demonize these tools for their use in criminal activities. For example, anonymizing software promotes freedom of speech and access to the greater global web in countries where such rights aren’t permitted. Beyond anonymizing software like TOR, it’s important to secure devices as best as possible, including computers, smartphones, and tablets. These devices are known as ‘endpoints’, and are inherently vulnerable simply because of the data or information they contain. If your devices aren’t secured, or the data on your devices isn’t secured, you’ll be more susceptible to attackers or surveillance. Because the FBI captured Ross Ulbricht’s laptop after he had entered his password, they were able to secure the most compelling form of evidence possible against him. Once again, you probably aren’t going to be hunted down by the FBI, but securing your devices and local data is still imperative to prevent attacks from outsiders. This is something that all businesses need to keep in mind. Digital security these days is just as important if not more important than physical security. Nowadays all you usually need for physical security is a good set of security cameras from a place like Pro-Vigil. Digital security however has many different software solutions available, and depending on your situation you may need to look around quite a bit. Finally, similar to the Miranda Rights read to suspects or criminals before arrest, anything you say online can and will be used against you. Everything you do online is logged in an eternal archive, barring a global apocalypse or doomsday scenario. Consider it this way – if you wouldn’t be comfortable with your children seeing a certain piece of information someday, then don’t put it out into the ether. This includes conversations on forums, comments on popular sites like Reddit, emails, text messages, and especially anything to do with social media. If you’re doing anything criminal or controversial on these platforms or domains, it’s very likely to catch up with you at some point in time. There’s always a trail In relation to the Silk Road, before even creating the darknet marketplace, Ulbricht had posted on multiple forums for illicit drugs and bitcoin to ask other users various questions. Simply by browsing through these forums around the time of Silk Road’s appearance online, the FBI was able to name Ulbricht as one of their suspects. Beyond his posting history and his use of the same username on multiple sites, he had even posted his personal email address containing his name. Posting on forums won’t likely land you in prison for life, but you should still be wary of anything and everything you put out there. Personal information can be acquired by identity thieves, employers can use damaging pictures against you, and anything criminal is certainly admissible as evidence against you should you get in trouble with the law. Be discrete and be smart –develop different usernames for different websites, and use secondary emails for websites as well. While the original Silk Road marketplace no longer exists, the lessons from its rise and fall can provide valuable teaching moments for anyone online today. It’s important to understand how to keep yourself secure through anonymizing software, securing devices, and what information you choose to spread digitally. Take heed, and stay secure. Mobile World Congress, Dial Tone Of The Internet And The Samsung Push

Mobile World Congress comes soon after the big announcement that Facebook has spent $19 billion buying messaging service Whatsapp. Although Mark Zuckerberg did gatecrash Mobile Congress 2014, the sale of Whatapp was not the only story coming out of event. One of the major players in the mobile world has thrown its weight behind a push in 2014. Samsung made major announcement about mobile devices and an introduction to the fitness market. What have we learned from Mobile World Congress, is 2014 the year for Samsung and why Facebook bought Whatapp? Mobile World Congress the best bits With no big announcement for Apple it was down to the other players to take the stage at Mobile World Congress. One of the bigger companies that seem to have fallen away in the market is Blackberry, however an announcement to come out of the congress was that Blackberry are to re-launch the QWERTY keyboard on a future device. This looks to be an attempt to bring back old fans of the brand and ‘to be different.’ One of the big mistakes Blackberry made was to follow the crowd rather than improve its product. This could be the last chance for Blackberry so 2014 could be a massive year for Blackberry. In the technology market it is often believed that the Chinese market is always one step ahead of the rest of the market, so it is important to take notice of a major push for ZTE. ZTE are the third largest vendors of systems for mobile communication and are launching a new handset in the Chinese market. The Grand Memo II handset has screen that covers 80 percent of the screen and is ‘protected by Gorilla Glass.’ Samsung Launch Fitness Devices At Mobile World Congress one of the biggest brands Samsung made an announcement about not only a new handset coming in April but also a number of fitness products. The fitness market is massive, with companies such as Nike, Jawbone and FitBit already jumping on the fitness bandwagon and creating fitness tracking devices, making the most of mobile technology. The idea is that you can link your fitness band to your smartphone apps so it makes sense that companies like Samsung create their own device. The new Samsung Galaxy S5 will feature a heart monitor that sounds like a bit of a gimmick however the S Health App will make the heart monitor useful. The heart monitor also features on the Gear 2 Smartwatch which links well with your Samsung Galaxy S5. The biggest push on the fitness market though is the Gear Fit. The Gear fit offers a great looking product (that does not look like a curfew tag) and offers a list of ‘the most comprehensive fitness tools available.’ Time will tell if Samsung become the leader in the fitness market, although it does look like major investment has been put into the market. Facebook Purchase of Whatsapp The big spot at Mobile World Congress was for Mark Zuckerberg following the $19 billion purchase of Whatsapp. The reason Zuckerberg purchased the service was due to the number of users. Whatsapp has half a billion users and whilst it is not the only app of its type, they do everything the right way. What has made phone companies nervous though is the long term strategy of Zuckerberg to ‘create a dial tone for the internet.’ The fact Zuckerberg gate crashed Mobile Congress could of put noses out of joint anyway but the long term strategy is the big issue. SMS messages are free to send for the carrier, it is the data cost the companies can charge for, Zuckerberg plans to work with companies to connect the world to the internet which can be bad news for phone companies. Already you can make VOIP and Skype calls for free over Wifi so mobile phone carriers could lose customers on higher data packages. Only time will tell whether Facebook grow their smartphone grip or go the way of most technology buyouts (remember Motorola and Google!). Could CRM Make Your Business / Marketing More Effective?

Would you like to grow your business? Of course you would, but doing so isn’t always easy, the bigger your business gets the harder it is to keep track of your customers, your costs, your logistics etc… Sometimes it is helpful to use technology to make your business more efficient and more effective so that you can grow without losing track of the bits that matter. And one such tool is CRM management. In this post we will look at a few of the things that are possible and how you can use CRM practically to make your business and your marketing more effective. What Is CRM Software? A good CRM solution keeps all of your important information in the same place. Specifically, your contacts, leads, customers and even purchase histories, along with past communications. One helpful thing that you can do is pull up any given customer and see their entire history with you. So if you get an email from them, you can quickly review what they bought from you 6 months ago and what other messages they have sent via email, telephone or even Twitter. Categorise Information: One big advantage of using CRM software is that you can set reminders so that you don’t have to think about them. A typical example is that you can set a reminder to email a particular lead or customer after a couple of weeks. You can even set up automatic emails based on criteria in your system. To take an example, imagine if you could set the system to follow up after a purchase and email a special offer to your customers… But: The particular offer would depend on what they purchased before The medium for contact (email, Twitter, Facebook) would depend on each customer’s preferences Stock & Inventory Management If you have a business which keeps stock then you may want to integrate your CRM with your stock managemen t system. Many CRM systems can track stock levels, but even if you already have a stock management system in place: You could set your CRM system to automatically contact suppliers when you run low on certain items of stock. You could use purchase history data to analyse which stock items are selling fastest so that you can better understand your stock levels and demand. Data Analysis This is arguably one of the most powerful uses for CRM – analysing sales data so that you can make better decisions. Here are some simple examples: By tracking customers you can work out their lifetime value much more accurately. When you base ROI on lifetime value instead of one-off sales value things like PPC suddenly become profitable. By linking your CRM to your finance system you can also track costs of sales more accurately, giving you more accurate profit figures and making that lifetime value even mo re accurate. By tracking all communications you can build a much clearer idea of how active your users are on social media and which platforms they prefer (hint: invest more time into those ones). 7 Tips When Selecting IT Infrastructure For Startups

Small companies that are just beginning to get off the ground need to be careful about how they approach IT. Too much money spent on an IT infrastructure can inhibit a company’s growth when they are just a startup company that has recently set up shop. Now with the enormous growth of cloud computing in the past few years, small businesses can take advantage of this form of technology in order to keep IT costs low. Cloud strategies can resolve a lot of the potential setbacks that startups experience when building their IT infrastructure. It takes planning and some important knowledge for a new company to set up their IT. These are some tips to help startups to select the right infrastructure that will serve them best. 1. Do Research and Don’t Rush So many new companies are too eager to get started and make a quick decision that is often disappointing. Start by doing your homework and evaluating how certain options match up to your business goals. If you know what your business objectives are then you will have a better sense of what infrastructure will best suit your needs. 2. Compare Costs and Create a Budget Especially for startups, the amount of money spent on building and maintaining an IT infrastructure is one of the most important factors in selecting a provider. As a budding company you might not have the capital that it takes to purchase and run an infrastructure onsite. Determine how much of your budget can be spent on IT costs and find an option that caters to your financial situation. 3. Evaluate Your Company’s IT Expertise An IT infrastructure can require the work of people experienced in technology to maintain the system or create disaster recovery options. If yo u do not have the level of expertise necessary to run your own infrastructure then you might consider using an offsite data center. 4. Consider Your Resource Needs If you are a small startup company but are hoping to expand then you might want to have options to increase your resources in the future. A more flexible and scalable IT infrastructure could be a preferred option for a company looking to grow. 5. Look for Reputable Providers If you are planning to outsource your IT and are interested in infrastructure providers then always look into their customer satisfaction ratings. A provider with a good reputation among its customers will be beneficial to a startup that does not want to run into any IT problems so early on in the life of their company. 6. Determine Your Security Needs When looking into providers, security is a big issue that has to be addressed before jumping anything . Consider what your company’s specific security needs are and then review the security policies of any provider you are interested in. 7. Visit Potential Providers A good way to select the right infrastructure provider is to see exactly what they do and how their facility it run. Visiting their operations center and meeting the people involved can give you a better understanding of how your company can benefit from their services. Why Having A Data Recovery Plan Is Crucial For Small Businesses

Hardware failure, hackers, viruses and other disasters are the worse enemy of a business, whether large or small, and a recovery plan is absolutely essential for the survival of any business. Though it may seem rather boring to plan ahead for data failures and such, it is always time well spent since data loss, whether sensitive or otherwise, could literally cripple any business. Digital data is now a part of everyone’s life, and this fact is not exclusive to online businesses anymore. The loss of such data would essentially mean loss of business and livelihood, without a proper data recovery plan the only hope is to start from scratch. Data loss can mean you can lose a client base, list of items in stock, prices, and much more important data like passwords and bank data. As you can see it is vital to back up your data, and here we will show you just how to do that with minimum fuss. First let’s create a data recovery plan as our first step. Creating a Plan Making a complete inventory of your business’s storage based hardware, which will save you valuable time in the future. Choosing an adequate data back up plan and a data recovery specialist like Easy Recovery will ensure your business enjoys the highest possible levels of data, you should do this as early as possible to ensure the solution is in place before any problems occur. Making sure the data recovery expert is reputable and finding out about the vendor’s expertise and certification (i.e. can they open a drive without voiding it’s warranty in case of recovery) will ensure you have peace of mind when leaving matters in their hands. Some online electronic vendors will offer free back-up service plans when purchasing storage m edia (i.e. hard drives) so it pays to enquire about such offers before making a purchase. Implement your data backup strategy as soon as possible so that everything is backed up should disaster strike. It is wise to keep the back-ups away from your in-house network and maintain them regularly, particularly if they contain data that changes regularly. Using Automated and Manual Solutions Backing up your own data manually is a great way to selectively choose what is important to your business, but at times the busy nature of a business does not make this the idea solution. While manual back up is great and cost effective, it is always too time consuming. Purchasing a back up program can save valuable time, though it can result in investing in more costly storage if you use it to perform automatic backups. More data backed up means more space needed in your drives or cloud storage, so manual backups are usually a m ore cost effective solution. Threats, Hackers and Viruses Lastly, though back up is important prevention is even more important. You should understand that malware, viruses and hackers are the first concerns you should have for your business’s online presence. Viruses are getting more sophisticated and some can completely encrypt your files without chance of recovery. Investing in powerful firewalls (i.e. hardware-based firewall solutions) and virus scanners can ensure your business’s peace of mind, and stop any unwanted scripts, viruses and malicious threats which could potentially spell disaster. Data recovery is not always possible in such cases, and this is where the implementation of your data backup plan becomes imporant, it is the only way you have of recovering files from certain viruses. As you can see, a combination of backing up your data, having a good firewall/anti virus and a solid data recovery specialist to fall back on can mean complete safety for your business. Never neglect any of these three aspects and your business will be sure to survive and potential data threats that come it’s way. These simple preventative measures will mean that your data will always be intact, and backing up everything will mean that you will not suffer any losses due to unpredictable events like hardware failure.
